Steel Dynamics Inc. is a producer of steel products including flat-rolled steel, engineered bars, structural steel, merchant bars, building systems and specialty shapes. It is the United States' fifth largest manufacturer of carbon steel products. It has three business operations: steel operations, fabrication operations, and steel scrap and scrap substitute operations. The company was founded in 1993 and is based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Its president and chief executive officer is Keith Busse. The company ranks 318 in the Fortune 500 annual list of top 500 companies in the country. It acquired Roanoke Electric Steel Corp. in 2006 and OmniSource Corp.

The Structural and Rail Division operates a plant in Columbia City while its Engineered Bar Products Division handles a plant in Pittsboro. The plant in Roanoke is managed by the Roanoke Bar Division.

Steel of West Virginia supplies steel structural beams and specialty shapes. New Millennium Building Systems manufactures trusses, steel joists, girders and steel decking. Meanwhile, Dynamic Composites is the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of Primix Cross Ties in the country, as well as in Mexico and Canada. Primix is a revolutionary composite railroad tie that is manufactured from recycled materials. The Techs manufactures several galvanized steel sheets while Elizabeththon Herb and Metal is consists of two scrap steel processing yards. The Flat Roll Division manufactures several cold rolled, hot rolled and coated steel products.

The Structural and Rail Division supplies the railroad industry with structural steel beams and pilings as well as rails. The Engineered Bar Products Division sells specialty bars and merchant bars. The Roanoke Bar Division is involved in scrap steel processing and in the manufacture of merchant steel products and billets. It operates a steel mini mill which melts the scrap steel and then casts the metal into billets. Steel Dynamics has about 3,500 employees. The company boasts that it is one of the most profitable American steel businesses in terms of operating profits and profit margins. It serves several industries including construction, mining, energy, automotive and agriculture. The construction industry is its biggest client, with a market share of 42%. Steel Dynamics trade at the NASDAQ Global Selection Market using STLD as its ticker symbol.
